Schrötter closer to the podium than ever & Vierge with heroic catching up

In the Grand Prix de France Marcel Schrötter secured his best ever Moto2 result with fourth place and just barely missed his first podium. Dynavolt Intact GP colleague Xavi Vierge started from the back of the grid due to technical problems and crossed the finishing line in fifth place at the end of an outstanding race.

Also the race Sunday at the Le Mans Circuit offered best weather conditions and over 100,000 French fans could look forward to exciting races.

Marcel Schrötter has been one of the strongest riders on the track for the entire weekend. On Saturday he scored the second row, his best qualifying result since last year's Australian GP. From fifth on the grid, the 25-year-old shot straight to third position and fought persistently to finally fulfil his dream of the first podium. 14 long laps he followed behind the top duo Francesco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez. A remarkable achievement of the German who is still affected by a shoulder injury. The last laps he finally had to let pass Joan Mir and settle for fourth place. Nevertheless, the joy of the best race result in the Moto2 class was high as well as of the 13 points, thanks to which he climbed to eighth place in the total standings.

For Xavi Vierge, who was supposed to tackle the 25-lap race from second position, everything turned out differently than expected. When the bike of the 21-year-old had a problem with the fuel pump and the engine didn't start, he had to go into the warm-up lap from the pit lane and begin the French GP from 35th place at the end of the field. The young Spaniard only had the goal to overtake as many competitors as possible. An impressive catching up followed! Overall, he managed to make up to 30 positions. With eight laps to go he had made it to fifth place, which he successfully defended against Miguel Oliveira, who came dangerously close. Finally Xavi Vierge finished right behind his teammate and maintained his sixth Championship position with another eleven points.

As it would almost certainly have been possible today to reach the podium of both riders, there was a certain disappointment, but nevertheless the focus is now moving to Mugello, where the Intact GP pair will launch a new attack from 1 to 3 June. Previously, the squad will spend another day in Le Mans and participate in the official Moto2 test on Monday.

Marcel Schrötter
A fourth place is great, of course, but I thought I could stay ahead. I was pretty sure I could ride with the front group today. I'm disappointed that it didn't work out in the end. But from the start and in the first lap, I realized that the others were just a tad faster. That was maybe a tenth or two each lap, but I couldn't go any faster than I did. I'm not quite sure why, but maybe it's because the asphalt is always a bit different when we ride before MotoGP. Then we had the two stupid crashes over the weekend, which is not normal for me, and of course you can feel it in the race too and you don't want to throw it away again. The disappointment is definitely there, but I think we generally had a good race weekend. This also shows that we are there and can keep up. Now we just have to work on getting even more competitive in the race and also in qualifying. From the middle of the corner, the others could perhaps turn their bikes better or had more traction, I don't know. The bike and the front were all not bad, but when I was braking and releasing the brake, it just took me a little too long to accelerate. We have to see why that is. The tyre didn't look very nice either after the race. We take home fourth place and I think we all did a good job anyway, but of course, when you're being so close, it's still pretty disappointing.

We had the rhythm to fight for the victory this weekend but after the problem before the start, it completely changed our plan. Then our only plan was to pass as many riders as soon as possible. That was difficult because at the beginning, with the new tyres everyone was really fast. It was difficult to pass them. The only way to overtake, was pushing the rear tyre. To win the race you need to start the race thinking about your tyre and today that wasn't possible. I was able to pass everybody, but when I arrived to P5, I tried to catch the leading group but my rear tyre was destroyed. I started to have a lot of problems because of that. I tried to stay in P5 but that was very difficult, because Oliveira came back to me so fast. At least we kept this position. I think we made a good job and I had a very good rhythm. Anyway, I think we had the potential to fight with the top guys today. And now we will try to stay at that level for all the following GP's. Thanks to my team for the great support and all the people who have my back, making me push hard.

Unfortunately, Xavi's bike didn't start because he had a problem with the fuel pump. Things like this can happen, but we didn't fix the problem within the five minute frame. As a result, he had to start from the last starting position. He rode a crazy race. That's why we are a bit disappointed, because otherwise it could have been a podium finish. Sadly, this can happen, but he rode a strong race and that's what matters. I am absolutely happy with the performance, because it was outstanding.
Marcel had a great pace all weekend and you shouldn't forget that he was injured. I have the highest respect for that. P4 is his best result so far and we can be absolutely happy. The guys have also done a great job. You can tell that both feel very comfortable on the bike. The mood is great, everything is good. I think we have proved that Argentina and Jerez were not a fluke, but that we can continuously improve. If we continue like this, we can achieve a lot.
