Vierge takes 9th place & Early crash for leading Schrötter

Xavi Vierge scores seven points in difficult Mugello, while Marcel Schrötter after a strong weekend, crashes in first place shortly after the start.

It was an almost perfect race Sunday in Italy with bright sunshine and crowded stands. Unfortunately not perfect for Marcel Schrötter, after the dream of a podium finish was unfortunately destroyed in turn two. Before, in his 145th Grand Prix, the Kalex rider had shot past pole-setter Mattia Pasini from the front row, taking the lead in the sixth race of the season. But only until the second corner, when the 25-year-old lost the front, sliding into the gravel.

The disappointment was written in his face, but he and his Dynavolt Intact GP squad know, that he is now one of the top five riders and that he's not missing much to finally get on the podium. In the World Championship, he moved back to ninth place. On Monday, at the one-day Test at Mugello, he can already work on the preparations for the Barcelona GP, which will take place from 15th to 17th of June.

At first, the Sunday seemed to be again difficult for Xavi Vierge. In the warm-up the Spaniard only had three laps available due to electronic problems on the bike. For the 21-year-old the whole weekend has been difficult and it would have been important to try out the set-up changes made from Saturday to Sunday. The race wasn't any easier for him, but as always, he gave everything he's got and fought in a sovereign ninth place. The seven points won, secured him the sixth place in the World Championship. Tomorrow he hopes to find some improvements for the Mugello Circuit before heading to his home Grand Prix in two weeks time.

Xavi Vierge
I am disappointed, not because of the race, because after this difficult weekend we have brought at least a few points home and that is important for the World Championship. But I'm a bit disappointed because we usually improve step by step on the track, but here we tried a lot of things and did not find anything all weekend to make me feel better. The race was pretty tough. After the first three or four laps, the front grip started getting worse. With each change of direction, I almost lost the front, so I could not really push.
That was difficult, but still I'm happy with the race because it was a very tough weekend. Also this morning in the Warm-Up we had problems and I could only ride three laps. It was hard to understand the change. I did my best and finished ninth. Big thanks to the team because they worked so hard during the weekend. We have the test tomorrow and we will try to understand the problem and hopefully find a solution.

Marcel Schrötter
It's just very disappointing. Everyone deserves it, but we work so hard every weekend. We are improving and had been within the top guys yesterday in qualifying, last race weekend we just missed the podium closely and now I made such a stupid mistake. I didn't crash all weekend and then this happens to me on race day. I don't know if I just wanted too much or tried too hard to stay ahead. Maybe I was not prepared yet after the first two turns. I don’t know. That doesn't matter now, it was just a stupid mistake. It's bitter and so disappointing. I believe that today we had the opportunity to fight for the podium. The times weren't that fast either, it is of course difficult to be there, but I had a good pace all weekend. We will continue to work hard, tomorrow we will have a test here and in two weeks we will continue in Barcelona. We will attack again and try to be in the front. I am convinced that we will get there this year.

After the fantastic weekend, a second grid position and the good consistency, which Marcel had all weekend, it is simply a great pity. We were pretty sure he could ride at the front. He had a great start, but then braked probably too hard in the second corner. This can happen. We still have to take the positives and in two weeks time we will move on. I am sure that we will attack again in Barcelona. Xavi has been struggling all weekend, so it was mainly damage limitation. That's absolutely ok. There is no reason to be too disappointed and to bury our heads in the sand. The test tomorrow will help both riders. Maybe we'll find something else for Xavi to feel better on the bike and for Marcel it's also good when he get's back on the bike and gets the crash out of his mind, to arrive in Barcelona with full motivation.
