Schrötter finishes 7th in Austria and closes up in the Championship

As a lone fighter for the Dynavolt Intact GP Team, Marcel Schrötter showed an excellent race in Spielberg, which he finished in seventh. In the World Championship he climbed up one position.

Sun filled the picturesque scenery of the Red Bull Ring on Sunday of the Austrian Grand Prix and Marcel Schrötter started the day with a great feeling, finishing the warm-up in the morning as fastest.

With his pace, he was once again among the top candidates at the eleventh race of the season and at his 150th Grand Prix. But after starting from the third row, the usual Moto2 scramble, especially in the first two tight corners, thwarted him. He lost the connection to the leading group and then fought in ninth position. A midway duel with Joan Mir, he could decide for himself and thus took the eighth place. Finally, when Alex Marquez crashed in the last lap just inches before the finish line in front of the Intact GP rider's group, which included Jorge Navarro and Brad Binder, he passed the chequered flag in seventh place.

Thanks to nine more points Marcel Schrötter climbed to seventh place in the Moto2 World Championship and is now only 22 points away from the top 3. Teammate Xavi Vierge slipped to eighth position at the same moment with only one point difference. The Spaniard unfortunately missed the Austrian Grand Prix after he injured his hand in a fall in qualifying through no fault of his own. Currently, the 21-year-old has already returned to Barcelona and is on his way to Dr. Xavier Mir at the Dexeus Hospital to decide if and when surgery will be necessary.

The MotoGP World Championship will continue in Silverstone / Great Britain from 24 to 26 August and the Dynavolt Intact GP team wishes Xavi Vierge all the best and hopes that he can return to the track until the next race.

Marcel Schrötter
I knew before that the first corner can be complicated. I had a good start, then I was outside, but in front of me there was a touch and behind me two others hit each other. But I got through quite well on the outside and wasn't that bad from the positions. But then I just didn't have enough power. It was all at once like in such a pull and two passed me on the left and two on the right. Suddenly I had everyone around me again in the second turn. I couldn't really find my way around in the first three or four laps, which is my biggest problem at the moment. Later, when I have really good lap times, the top guys was already away. I could still catch up to the group, but it was just too late. It's a pity and annoying because we have the pace, but the first laps are crucial. We have to work on that. It's always been little things. On this track it is extremely difficult to ride every lap perfectly, because of these long braking phases and downhill passages. You push pretty hard and so it is easy to go wide, which makes it's hard to ride faster, catching up without making any mistakes. With two more laps I believe I could have caught the two in front of me, because I was faster. But I know that I have to work on being fast in the first few laps and I am sure once we get there we will be in the front.

Marcel's race was very good. Of course, we expected a better position. It was just a shame that he was pushed far out right at the beginning. He had to leave the track and then the speed went down which caused him to lose several positions. He fought his way forward, but it would have been better if he had not lost so much time at the beginning. At this track it is just difficult to make up for these places. But you could see that he was just as fast as the lead, especially at the end. He just lacked a bit of luck today. Overall, I think this race of him was much better than in Brno and when you look at the World Championship ranking you see that there is still a lot possible. Only 22 points part him from P3, and if he continues like that, he can make a good step forward, just like Xavi. The crash and the injury of Xavi was a pity, especially because it happened faultlessly. We have to wait for further investigations. Of course we hope that he recovers quickly and maybe he can ride again at Silverstone.
