Schrötter & Vierge finish Malaysia weekend in ninth and eleventh place

In a relentless Malaysian Grand Prix the Dynavolt Intact GP riders Marcel Schrötter and Xavi Vierge fought to the limit and were able to secure solid results again at the end of the five-week overseas tour.

The race day at the Sepang International Circuit already started at 8:10 am with the warm-up. Heavy rain had raged overnight, so despite the sunshine, the asphalt was still wet during the morning session. When the 18th Moto2 race in 2018 started in front of more than 100,000 cheering Asian fans at 11:20 am, the conditions were extremely hot and dry, making the Malaysian Grand Prix a heat-battle, as expected.

Marcel Schrötter was physically and mentally well prepared, although his tenth grid place was not the best starting position for the 18-lap race. In addition, his drinking tube was blocked and he had to endure the nearly 40-minute fight without any liquid. In the first lap, he was initially pushed back to 16th position, but then the 25-year-old had a constantly strong rhythm again. His lap times were identical to those at the top, so he could have been one of the podium contenders again. Finally, he crossed the finish line as a solid ninth. In the World Championship, Marcel Schrötter slipped to eighth place, nine points behind today's race winner, Luca Marini.

Xavi Vierge was able to defend his position from third row in the first lap, but then had trouble finding the good feeling that he's had in qualifying. The 21-year-old could not push as he would have needed to continue to move forward or at least not drop back any further. Finally, he was able to finish in eleventh place. The Spaniard takes home a total of 35 points, including an Australian podium from the four overseas races. In the World Championship rankling he follows in ninth place, seven points behind his teammate.

For the Dynavolt Intact GP team, an intense time away from Europe comes to an end. With five top ten results and a trophy in the baggage, they continue towards the grand final, which takes place in two weeks from 16th to 18th November in Valencia, Spain.

The first lap just keeps being difficult for us. Last week I showed that I can ride aggressively, but it makes a difference whether you battle within the top 10, where all are equally strong, or if you fight in 15th position and behind. It's easier, of course. I don't know what it is. It has never been my weakness in the past but it ruins our race. Of course, the tenth position from qualifying was the base of everything. After the start I was only sixteenth, surrounded by many riders in the first two laps. We have one more chance this year. In each race, I try to go different ways, but it's often a decision of a millisecond on what you do in the first corner. Then there are of course 30 other riders and when one opens up, pushing you wide, then the plan that you have made is crushed. Otherwise, I rode a good race. It's a shame to say I could have fought for the podium again, or at least in the top five, if you look at my lap times. We know we can be there and we just have to keep working on it. If we bring the details together and stay in the lead in the first laps, then we can be at the top in every race. The team did a great job, the bike was really good in the race, especially with so little track time. A big thanks to the team. The pace was good, the race was good, unfortunately the camel bag did not work right from the start. There was no liquid coming through and that was really tough at the end. I had to concentrate a lot to not make any mistakes. You really notice that you're dehydrating and I've been missing that for the last two laps in order to make that last attack. But I made it through quite well and that's what matters.

I am very disappointed with the race and I struggled all weekend. Yesterday, in the middle of the Qualifying we finally made a step forward and I made that lap time alone. I was very confident for today's race, but when I started the race, from the first lap onwards, I felt like I couldn't push on the front tyre. Nothing happened and at every braking point, I went straight. I tried to find a good corner speed but I lost the front every time and there was nothing I could do. I tried to stay on the bike, I tried everything. I even changed my riding style in every lap but nothing worked. Finally, I almost crashed 15 times. The best way today was to actually finish the race in that position. Now we will check the data to find a solution because it was so different to yesterday. We will take the positive things of these past races to the very last round.

It's been five nice weeks, but it was exhausting for everyone, not just for the riders, but for the whole team. However, it was a lot of fun and we also have a few positive things to report - a podium and several top 10 results. That's something we can be proud of. Marcel rode a strong race today. Unfortunately, it was a bit difficult from tenth on the grid. Then he was pushed wide in the first lap and has lost several positions. Once he was able ride himself free again, he rode a strong race. From the lap times, he could easily have ridden in the top 5, maybe even on the podium. That's why we have to be satisfied. We have to make sure that we are further in front in qualifying again. He fought clean, rode well and made no mistakes. With Xavi it was a pity. He was struggling from the start and couldn't keep up with the pace from the top. Why, we do not know yet. We have to analyze the data first and see what it was, but it was not his day.
