A great Sachsenring battle ended for Schrötter in 6th and for Vierge in 7th

An eventful home Grand Prix weekend at the Sachsenring culminated on Sunday in exciting duels of a 28-lap thriller that the Dynavolt Intact GP riders Marcel Schrötter and Xavi Vierge brought to the finish line in sixth and seventh place.

More than 190,000 spectators came to the Sachsenring this weekend to cheer on their MotoGP stars in the most beautiful summer weather. Also on race Sunday the sun was shining and the riders of the Dynavolt Intact GP team were additionally motivated by the supporting German fans.

Local hero Marcel Schrötter caught up in his home race within a few laps from ninth grid position to fourth position, where he was able to stay for a long time and tried everything to reduce the gap to the top three. At the same time, he had to remain extremely concentrated in order not to let Miguel Oliveira pass, who soon found a way to overtake the Bavarian. From that moment on the rhythm of the 25-year-old was not the same as before. In fifth position he lost the connection to the Portuguese, while Sam Lowes caught up from behind. Then in the last corner of the race a small mistake happened and Marcel involuntarily opened the door for the Briton, who immediately took his chance and displaced him to sixth place.

The disappointment over the lost place a few meters from the finish line wasn't too big, because with ten more points Marcel could jump up two places in the overall classification and can now go into the summer break as eighth of the World Championship.

The race of Xavi Vierge already took a different course than planned in the first lap. The fastest from Friday and third from Sunday morning's warm-up session had a collision with Oliveira right at the start of the Sachsenring GP, which even caused the release of the young Catalan's airbag. The 21-year-old, who started from the second row of the grid, lost almost ten positions after the incident and passed the start and finish line in 15th place. Within a very short time he caught up again some positions and led a duel with the Italian Simone Corsi. Eventually, Xavi Vierge managed to keep Corsi in bay and to be the winner of his group in the fight for seventh position.

In the Moto2 World Championship the Intact GP Kalex rider slipped to seventh place, where he is only six points away from his German teammate.

But before the points hunt continues in the Czech Brno from 3 to 5 August, after nine races the Memmingen racing team is now entering its well-deserved summer break.

Marcel Schrötter
We haven’t been performing consistently in all situations and with the different tyres this weekend. We were predominantly in the front of the field when using the soft tyres. The soft tyre just suits me more. With the hard tyre it has been more difficult for me. I am disappointed with myself for losing one place in the last turn. Something like this shouldn’t happen. Especially, because it was my own mistake. I wanted to close in without overworking the front but didn’t find a good line. That’s why Lowes was able to overtake and that’s why I am angry with myself. I was able to keep Oliveira behind me for a while, but when he overtook me I wasn’t able to keep up the pace during the last ten laps. Maybe it would have been different, had we been in the front from the start, because the pace was similar. In the meantime I was even faster than the front group. In this class it is extremely difficult to catch up if everyone performs at the same pace. However, sixth place is fine and we have moved up two places in the championship. It's a good feeling to go into the summer break in 8th place of the World Championship. We need to work on being more competitive until the end. That is why we will continue the good work in Brno.

Xavi Vierge
I am a little disappointed because we had the rhythm here to fight for a better position. But that's racing. Oliveira hit me very hard in the first lap, so that my airbag opened and I lost about ten positions. After that I tried to catch up, but the gap to the leading group was already very big. Also my feeling with the motorcycle was not like in the warm-up in the morning. The grip felt worse. The fight with Corsi was tough. I was stronger in sectors T1 and T4, but then I lost everything in T2 and T3, where he was much better. He also had better traction. All the time he was passing the same corner and we couldn't build a good rhythm. I've tried everything to keep him behind me. It's positive that I finished in front and as the first of my group. I collected some points for the championship again. Now comes an important break in which we review the first half of the season. After that we will try to make further progress.

Jürgen Lingg
It was definitely a tough race. Sure, we expected a little bit more, but the air up there is just very thin. It was a shame that Marcel could no longer keep his pace the minute that Oliveira overtook him. Otherwise chances for a fourth place would have been high for him today. Moto2 is a difficult class and in the top 10 everyone has what it takes to win a race. You have to try to be part of the front of the field right from the beginning. Unfortunately, that didn't work out for us today. Nevertheless, it was a good race and we are quite happy with the result. Xavi fought well, too. He was unlucky to run into Oliveira. That cost him a lot of places. But in the end he was able to assert his group. We know that our guys are fast and our bikes work very well. Therefore, we are now looking confidently towards Brno, where we will start the next race after the summer break.
