Fifth Podium of the Year for Rainmaster Folger

Jonas Folger took third place behind Franco Morbidelli in 2nd and the newly crowned Double Moto2 World Champion Johann Zarco in Malaysia. Teammate Sandro Cortese struggled on the wet track and finished in 17th.

In the last of the three overseas races, which was held at the Sepang International Circuit, Jonas Folger was close to taking second place. From the start, the 23-year-old was one of the three podium chasers together with Johann Zarco and Franco Morbidelli. With remaining six laps in the race, which had started in the rain, Zarco took over the lead from Morbidelli. When the French man gained an ever-bigger gap, Jonas became increasingly stronger on a drying track. Three laps to go, he closed the distance to Morbidelli in front of him and passed. When trying to catch up the three seconds to Zarco, the Intact GP rider went late on the brakes in turn 7 and had to go wide. Morbidelli moved up again and finally crossed the finish line in front of the Bayern.

Nevertheless, the joy about third place was huge. For Jonas it is the fifth podium of the year, the second 2nd place since Argentina and the return to the podium since his victory in Brno six races ago. In the overall standings Jonas climbed up to sixth. Before the final show down in Valencia in two weeks, Sam Lowes in 5th is only three points away.

After Sandro Cortese was able to perform the last two races in Japan and in Australia with flying colours, he struggled in the Malaysia Grand Prix. On a wet track, he lost some positions at the start. Later, as the conditions were getting better, the 26-year-old was riding times similar to the ones within the top 10. In the final lap, the Kalex rider tried to overtake the Belgian Xavier Simeon and to take home a point at least as 15th. But they touched each other; Sandro had to go straight and dropped down to 17th.

In the World Championship Sandro had to take a step back to 14th. When the MotoGP circus meets again in Valencia from 11th to 13th November, Sandro has a last chance to reduce the ten points gap to eleventh place.

Jonas Folger
I started confident into the race, but I didn't think that I would have such big grip problems in the race. On Friday I could do 2:21 times in the wet. In the race, we started today with even 2:26 times. There was more water on the track, but even to the end, when it got drier, I still had problems. In any case, it was pretty hard. Johann and Franco were very fast. It was difficult for me to keep up with them. In the end, I was quicker than Franco on the drying track. Johann was already building up a lead, he took a lot of risk and, of course, had the title win in focus. I passed Franco. I just had a good run and was sure of the 2nd place. The distance to Johann was three seconds. I thought I had to keep pushing hard, in case he makes a mistake. In Turn 7, I was a bit too late on the brake and I almost lost control of the front. Too bad that it was not enough for 2nd place. Nevertheless, a podium is very nice for us. Congratulations to Johann for his second Moto2 title. I am very happy for him. He had an incredible season and did very smart races. He deserves it 100%.

Sandro Cortese
It was a very difficult race today for me. I had no feeling for the bike. I tried hard, but I just wasn't able to go faster. Unfortunately, I did not even get a point on position 17. I finally had a touch with Simeon and went straight. I'm not happy, after the last two race weekends were so positive. Today, unfortunately, I did not succeed with a happy end of the overseas races. In the dry I would have been strong, but in the rain it just should not be.

The conditions were at least clear at the start and we didn't need to play lottery with the tyres. Jonas was a bit too cautious at the beginning, but in the end he made a good catch up. He had already passed Morbidelli, but then went wide in a corner. This was, of course, also difficult on a drying track. The tyres looked very bad. That's why we can be absolutely satisfied with third place. Sandro had to start from 15th place, which is already a difficult starting position in the Moto2. He could not build up a feeling for the bike today, especially for the front. This can happen from time to time in the rain. It took too long for him to find a rhythm. But we have to check off this race now and look towards Valencia.
